Total Dissolved Solids May Be Compromising Your Water
Total Dissolved Solids, or TDS, measures all the substances dissolved in your water; both minerals and other compounds. This includes things like calcium, magnesium, salts, nitrates, fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.
Even if your water looks clear, some of these dissolved solids can affect taste, odor and overall water quality. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recommends drinking water stay below 500 parts per million (ppm) TDS. This guideline is mainly about taste and appearance, not safety, which means water can meet this standard but still taste off or contain minerals and compounds you don’t want in your drinking water. For example, a lot of municipal water supplies from LCA (Lehigh County Authority) or Allentown have a TDS between 300-400 which may meet EPA standards, but YUCK!
